Typhoid Hits 12,000 People in Uganda

April 21, 2015 – Not less than 12, 000 people are suspected to have been infected with typhoid fever  in Uganda between January 1, April 14, 2015, the Centre for Decease Control(CDC) has said.

According to CDC, two deaths have been recorded while cases have been reported in Kampala,  Wakiso and Mukono districts.

Consequently the CDC has advised those traveling to Uganda to ensure that they take typhoid vaccine before travelling  and ensure that they follow water and food precaution during their trip to help prevent spread of the decease.

In a statement, CDC warned travelers to eat only cooked food served hot, hard cooked eggs, vegetables washed with clean water and ensure that fruits are peeled before consumption.

It is warning travelers to stay away from food served at room temperature,  half cooked eggs, food from street vendors, raw or uncooked fish and meat, unwashed vegetable, salads, condiments such as salsa made with fresh ingredients, unpasteurized dairy products and bush meat.

It called on travelers to drink sealed water and that carbonated water are better, drink hot coffee, pasteurized milk and water that has been boiled and disinfected.
