January 29, 2015 – The Lagos State Government has said that it will hold the first of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise for the year 2015 on Saturday, January 31.
According to Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, there will be restriction of human and vehicular movement between the hours of 7:00am-10am on Saturday 31st January, 2015.
He called on residents to come out in large numbers to actively participate in the exercise by cleaning their homes, frontage drains and totality of their environment.
Bello explained that so much waste has been generated within the past few months particularly during the festival, adding that cleaning must therefore be carried out in all parts of the state.
He urged Lagosians to properly dispose their waste through LAWMA and authorized PSP operators while warning residents who still patronize cart pushers to desist from the act since it is an offense in the state to patronize cart pushers.
He said that government remains committed to a clean, hygienic and flood free environment and therefore urged Lagosians to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and unapproved sites.
He warned interstate Bus Operators, the state transport owners and road transport workers association to comply with the restriction of vehicular movement order between 7.00am-10.00am adding that any vehicle caught violating this order will be dealt with appropriately, while passengers in such vehicles will also be prosecuted according to the state sanitation laws.
He further assured that Law Enforcement Agencies including Nigerian Police and officials from LAWMA, LASTMA and KAI have been fully mobilized to enforce the non-restriction of movement order and warned that violators would be prosecuted accordingly.
