November 26, 2014 – Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Suleiman Abba today declined to recognize Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The IGP appeared before the House Committee on Police Affairs to explain his role in the incident that lead to lawmakers scaling the fence to access the premises of the National Assembly last week.

During the sitting, the IGP addressed the Speaker as Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal without referring to him as Speaker of the House.

He however explained that there was a report of attempt by thugs to invade the assembly hence his men were deployed to the scene to screen everybody gaining access into the chambers through physical identification of everybody.

“That was disrupted by arrival of Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, and you saw how people we suspect to be fraud crossed the fence and that resulted in the situation where tear gas exploded”, he said.

Pressed further to recognize the Tambuwal as Speaker he said that commenting on the issue will be subjudice since the matter concerning the status of the Speaker is already before the court of law awaiting judicial interpretation.

“It will be subjudice for me to comment on a matter is before the court”, he said. His unyielding posture however forced the committee to adjourn as members threatened to walk out of the session.
