September 30, 2014 – The Lagos State Government said today that drivers operating in Lagos State will in a short-while obtain their driver’s licences in 2 hours. It takes a minimum of six months to obtain the current driver’s licence after appearing for a photo session.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa who made the revelation at the flag-off of one-stop centre of Motor Vehicle Administration Agency(MVAA) said that 302,000 drivers licences were processed in the state in 2011, adding that about 194, 000 others are yet to be processed out of the 511,030 applications captured since 2011.

He said the one-stop centre raised capacity of the state to benchmark the best in the world in the provision of cutting-edge vehicle documentation service and products.

” The building we are commissioning today will afford every Lagosian the opportunity to come into this building fill their forms, access the internet, pay at the same point, visit the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, Vehicle Inspection Services, do their data capture and get their temporary driver’s licence the same day within maximum of 2 hours.

“Apart from that, we will also able to procure your plate numbers for your vehicle and your individual licence renewal and other services under Motor vehicle administration and drivers’ licences. This is the way it should be and that is what we are offering Lagosians. The Temporary Vehicle Tag, the latest product from the stable of the MVAA will also be issued at the One- Stop Centre”.

He said that the agency had in the last three years captured about 50 percent of the total vehicles in the country in the unified driver licences.
“We have captured on our data base 511,030 applicants out of which we have 302,000 fully processed and 194,000 yet to be captured, the point that I’m making here is that we still have 194,000 applicants who are yet to be processed and this is not acceptable to us in Lagos State. It could have been solely in charge.

“Out of these, it is also interested to know that the number represent almost 50 percent of the total in the entire country of Nigeria. What this means is that we started one year late behind every other states of the federation and of date, we have documented more every other states in Nigeria.

He while handing over the project, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola explained that influx vehicles in the state necessitated holistic approach to make life easier for residents in spite of the growing population.

“Today, apart from road solutions, from just about 100, 000 commuters a day, who were travelling on Lagos water ways, I can tell you very confidently today that we now have over 3million passengers every months being moved by about 200 ferries privately owned and licenced and more ferries are coming. Before the end of the year, we will deploy 3 of the big ferries that Alhaji Lateef Jakande bought during his term,” the Governor added.

He said the administration has also, through the Lagos Traffic Law, reduced accidents and armed robberies in the state.
