Another Infected Lagos Doctor Dies of Ebola Virus Disease

August 19, 2014 – The Ministry of Health has announced the passing away of another medical doctor at the Lagos isolation centre in Yaba, Lagos. The death of the doctor brings to five the number of people that have died of the disease in Nigeria.

In a statement, Honourable Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said the doctor died Tuesday evening.

He identified the doctor as the most senior female doctor who participated in the management of the Liberian-American, Mr. Patrick Sawyer who died of EVD in Lagos.

He said death rate for Ebola in Nigeria now stands at five adding that the two other patients in isolation are stable and are doing well.

“The Honourable Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu regrets to announce the death, this evening, of one of the primary contacts of the index Ebola Virus Disease case, the most senior doctor who participated in the management of the patient, a female consultant physician.

“With this unfortunate development the total number of Ebola Virus related deaths in Nigeria now stands at five.

“The other two patients currently under treatment in the isolation wards are stable and are being taken care of”, the minister said in the statement.
